Now, it's expanding to small towns and hurting chains like Chick-fil-A, according to Placer.ai. Popular steak house chain Texas Roadhouse, which is 1.6 miles from the new Chipotle, saw year-over-year traffic slide by 5.27% in April and by 3.92% in May 2023. A Chick-fil-A less than a mile from Chipotle, saw foot traffic decrease four out of five weeks in May, Placer.ai reports. "I don't see how Chipotle's brand can transfer to small towns." Chipotle isn't betting all of its growth on small towns.

The heat wave in Texas has offered little reprieve. Heat at night disrupts sleep and prevents the body from recovering and cooling down, making minimum temperatures a critical indicator of a heat wave's severity, experts said. Texas State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon said temperatures during this heat wave in the state have threatened records at both ends of the spectrum — including maximums and minimums — in its urban centers. Ebi said the high nighttime temperatures and the prolonged nature of the Texas heat wave are particularly concerning. "A very small percentage of death certificates during a heat wave put down, 'heat' as an underlying cause," Ebi, who studies heat deaths, adding that about half of excess deaths, on average, are from cardiovascular diseases.

A weather pattern that has brought unrelenting heat to Texas for more than a week is unlikely to end until at least early July, according to forecast models, with record-breaking heat expected to expand into nearby states this weekend. “It feels like you stuck your head in an oven,” said Tom Decker, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in San Angelo, Texas, describing what it has been like when he stepped outside this week. The temperature recorded at his forecast office tied its record of 111 degrees on Monday and shattered it again on Tuesday and Wednesday with readings of 114 each day. When it is this bad, Mr. Decker said, he spends most of his time in an air-conditioned office or home. But he is concerned for people who don’t have that luxury, such as the crews drilling for oil, and the ranchers and the farmers in his forecast region.

On Tuesday, San Angelo in western Texas set a new record high temperature of 114 degrees, topping its prior record of 111 degrees. Adding to the demand on Texas power supplies and prices is the tropical-level humidity in the state that worsens the heat effect, making it feel like 120 degrees or more. The heat wave is expected to last longer than a week, meaning the power grid will be under extended strain. The heat wave is expected to continue toppling records next week, when ERCOT sees demand reaching 82,080 MW on Monday and 83,555 MW on June 28.
